Regretting your child’s choices and releasing the guilt you hold

Do you carry guilt regarding the lifestyles your children have chosen? Do you recognize that they are Spiritual Beings here to have a human experience just as you are?

Each of us chose our parents and other relationships before our inception. It’s easy for us to believe this for ourselves, but not for our children as if they couldn’t have possibly chosen you as their parent and the relationship they would have with you. The ego uses man’s parent/child relationship rules to create inequality and friction between you.

Khalil Gibran states in his book, The Prophet, “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love, but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts…”

We tend to exert ownership and strict control over the human bodies we create for the Spiritual Beings (children) that come through us. The label of “child” in our world implies a “right” or obligation to mold the child’s thoughts and behavior. Our divine role is to offer guidance that is meant to be unconditional, loving and optional. Instead, we provide guidance out of obligation governed by our culture, law and religion; guidance based upon fear; and guidance with mandatory imposition. Yet, we are surprised when rebellion happens.

To diffuse the rebellion, be willing to allow your children to have their own thoughts. Recognize that they are Spiritual Beings who are no older, wiser, or less creative than you are.
